History of the Sinulog

Sinulog’s religious roots reach back to 1521, when Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu and gave the Santo Niño image to Queen Juana at her baptism. The festival’s name relates to sulog, a Cebuano term for a water current. Its flowing dance movements express devotion to the Santo Niño.

The Basilica describes the traditional religious dance, or Sinug, as two steps forward and one step back. Visitors can encounter both this devotional tradition and the costumed dance performances in the festival program. Religious services and festival events have separate schedules, so plan for the activities you want to attend.

  • Dress light and bring water. January days are warm and the crowds are dense.
